ALICANTE (MediA Ecosystem Deployment Through Ubiquitous Content-Aware Network Environments) FP7-ICT-248652 (IP)
The ALICANTE project proposes a novel concept towards the deployment of a networked "Media Ecosystem".
The proposed solution is based on a flexible cooperation between providers, operators, and end-users, finally enabling every user -first-
to access the offered multimedia services in various contexts, and -second- to share and deliver his own audiovisual content dynamically, seamlessly, and transparently to other users.
Towards this goal, ALICANTE's advanced concept provides Content-awareness to the Network Environment, Network- and User Context-awareness to the Service Environment, and adapted services/content
to the End-User for his best service experience possible, taking the role of a consumer and/or producer.
The ALICANTE architecture introduces two novel virtual layers on top of the traditional Network layer,
i.e. a Content-Aware Network layer (CAN) for network packet processing and a Home-Box layer for the actual content delivery.
The innovative components, proposed to instantiate the CAN are Media-Aware Network Elements (MANE),
i.e. CAN-enabled "routers" and associated managers offering together content- and context aware Quality of Service/Experience,
security, and monitoring features, in cooperation with the other elements of the ecosystem.

VITAL++ : Integration of user centric communication methodologies into
Telecommunication infrastructures FP7-ICT-2007-2
VITAL++ major objective is to combine and experiment with the best of
the two worlds, namely, IMS-like
control plane functionality and P2P technology giving rise into a new
communication paradigm bringing a wide
range of benefits. The key to achieving this objective is to put this
paradigm under strenuous experimentation,
carried out under realistic network conditions using popular
applications. To this end, VITAL++ is putting
together a pan-European testbed comprised of geographically distributed
test sites integrated by IMS technology.
This will be thoroughly tested by reference content applications and
services that use P2P technology as a means
for their distribution and achieving satisfactory QoS levels through
network resource optimisation algorithms
rather than non-scalable QoS configuration operations.

IMOSAN : Integrated Multi-layer Optimization in broadband DVB-S.2 SAtellite Networks
IMOSAN is an EU funded IST project which proposes an integrated management solution that allows optimum usage of the satellite spectrum, which spans across three layers: physical, network and service. This multi-layer optimization will be based on the capabilities of DVB-S.2 standard and will be performed in an integrated and coherent way for all layers, using a Satellite Resource Management System (SRMS). Adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) features of DVB-S.2 standard will be exploited, to provide optimization in time varying operating environments. An actual DVB-S.2 satellite network will be developed, to demonstrate and validate the capabilities of the multi-layer management solution. This will be achieved through the provision of digital TV programs, interactive services and telephone connections (triple play services), to end users, under real conditions. The return channel will be based on DVB-RCS technology and a DVB-S.2/DVB-RCS gateway will be incorporated, upgraded with SRMS and tested. The performance of the network will be evaluated through the provision of triple play services, as well as through a tele-learning application.

ATHENA : Digital Switchover: Developing Infrastructures for Broadband Access
ATHENA is an EC Sixth framework project, which commenced on the 1st of January 2004, and which will propose the proper actions to be taken concerning the Digital Switchover (DSO) in UHF, (the transition form analogue television broadcasting to digital TV). These actions are of strategic importance for the European Member Countries and most candidate ones, as the DSO arises as a possible and complementary solution towards the deployment of Broadband Access Infrastructures, especially in less favoured regions. A number of EU countries have already disposed broadband networking infrastructures, and commercial interest in satellite and cable networks have been established. However, in many other EU states, and in most Candidate Countries, the digital switchover can arise as a unique opportunity to fill the gap in the deployment of networking infrastructures.

REPOSIT : Real Time Dynamic Bandwidth Optimisation in Satellite Networks
The REPOSIT project will define, develop, implement, demonstrate and validate a spectrum efficient interactive satellite (DVB-S) network, using real time dynamic management of the available bandwidth, for supporting a variety of heterogeneous bit rate services, like interactive TV, Internet and multimedia applications. The network will be used for the interconnection of terrestrial distribution nodes and will be tested over an actual regenerative satellite (STENTOR). Both downlink and uplink will be based on DVB-S technology. The network uses spectrum in an efficient way, as it is dynamically and in real time adaptable according to the services and end-users requirements and the available network resources. The validation of the REPOSIT project will be achieved through field trials using a regenerative satellite (STENTOR) and three characteristic types of terrestrial networks: DVB-T, WLAN and xDSL.

DIAMOUSES :
The DIAMOUSES project was funded by the Regional Programme of Crete and its implementation started at the beginning of 2006. It is coordinated by the Music Technology department of the Technological Educational Institute of Crete and its objective is the development of an innovative distant music performance, through the use of wired (DSL, LAN) and wireless (WiFi, DVB-T) networks. Academic institutions and businesses are participating in the project, while it is expected to be completed in 2 years time.
