Charalambos Skianis

Dr. Charalabos Skianis a research associate with the Research and Development of Telecommunication Systems Laboratory (PASIPHAE) at the Centre for Technological Research of Crete, Greece is currently a Researcher with the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications at the National Centre for Scientific Research ‘Demokritos’, in Greece and a visiting Lecturer in the Department of Information and Communication Systems at the University of the Aegean in Samos, Greece. He holds a PhD degree in Computer Science, University of Bradford, United Kingdom and a BSc in Physics, Department of Physics, University of Patras, Greece.

He has been actively working on the area of computer and communication systems performance modeling and evaluation where he has introduced alternative methodologies for the approximate analysis of certain arbitrary queuing network models. He is also keen in traffic modeling and characterization, queuing theory and traffic control of wired and wireless telecommunication systems. His current research activities take upon mobile and wireless networking, ubiquitous and pervasive computing and End-to-End Quality of Service provisioning in heterogeneous networks environment, convergence of wireless, mobile and broadcast networks.

His work is published in journals, conference proceedings and as book chapters and has also been presented in numerous conferences and workshops. He acts within Technical Program and Organizing Committees for numerous conferences and workshops and as a Guest Editor for scientific journals. He is at the editorial board of journals (IEEE Wireless Communications; AdHoc Networks-Elsevier; Telecommunication Systems: Modeling, Analysis, Design and Management (Springer); Journal of Communications Software and Systems - Croatia ΙΕΕΕ Sister Society, International Journal of Simulation and Process Modelling-Intersience), a member of pronounced professional societies (senior member of IEEE, ACM) and an active reviewer for several scientific journals (Transactions on Networking (IEEE/ACM); Transactions on Vehicular Technology (IEEE); Transactions on Circuits and Systems I (IEEE); Performance Evaluation (Elsevier Science); Computer Communications (Elsevier Science); International Journal of Network Management (Wiley); SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics (SIAP)).

He acted as Guest Editor for the journal Simulation: Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International entitled ‘Performance Modeling and Simulation in Healthcare Information Systems’; for the Computer Communications journal (Elsevier Science) on 'End-to-End QoS Provisioning Advances'. He is the Guest Editor for the European Journal of Operational Research Special Issue entitled ‘Performance Evaluation of QoS-aware Heterogeneous Systems’; for the IEEE Network Magazine Special Issue entitled ‘Convergence of Internet and Broadcasting Systems’; for the International Journal of Network Management (Wiley) Special Issue entitled ‘Management Solutions for QoS Support over the Entire Audio-Visual Service Distribution Chain’ (vol. July-August 2007). He is the Guest Editor for the journal of Computer Networks (Elsevier Science) entitled ‘Synergy of Telecommunication and Broadcasting Networks’; for the Special Issue ‘Security, Privacy and Trust in Beyond-3G Systems’, at the journal Telecommunication Systems: Modeling, Analysis, Design and Management (Springer).

He acted as IEEE ComSoc representative at the ‘8th International Conference on e-Health Networking, Application & Services’ (HealthCom 2006), New Delhi, India, 17-19 August 2006. He acted as member of the organizing committee for IFIP Networking 2004; he chaired the IFIP Networking 2005 workshop entitled ‘World Class Events: Telecommunication Challenges’ and he co-chairs the IFIP Networking 2006 & 2007 workshops entitled ‘Security and Privacy in Mobile and Wireless Networking’. He has also chaired the IEEE Globecom 2006 Symposium entitled 'World Class Solutions: Networking the Globe'; the workshop entitled 'IP over DVB networks' at the IEEE ICC 2006; and the 12th International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD ’07) part of PIMRC 2007. He is an active member of several Technical Committees within the IEEE ComSoc [TC II; TC CSIM-EiC for the eNewsletter; TC ComSoft], and member of IEEE BTS; IEEE TVT and IEEE CS. He is the Editor-in-Chief for the new book series by Troubador Publishing Ltd. entitled 'Emerging Communication and Service Technologies'.
